Overview

Grafana Labs is the company behind Grafana, a popular open source tool for visualizing and analyzing metrics with its instantly recognizable dashboards. With both its open source technology and enterprise products, Grafana Labs allows organizations to understand their metrics no matter where they are stored, and create, explore, and share dashboards to foster a data-driven culture. Founded in 2014, Grafana Labs has grown rapidly ever since. We are believers in the power of global, distributed teams: Talent is not limited by borders, and great workplaces are made up of exceptional colleagues. We have aggressive growth plans and are an ambitious, hardworking, and friendly team.

Location: Remote in EU & East Coast US time zones

Grafana Labs is the company behind Grafana, an open source dashboarding tool for visualizing and analyzing metrics. It’s commonly used for infrastructure and application monitoring, but we’ve also seen installations to monitor things like beehives, power-plants, or even ambulances. Grafana’s mission is to democratize metrics: users can create dashboards that help them get insights into how their applications behave, enabling them to iterate, take action and improve faster. Commercially, Grafana Labs sells enterprise support plans and has a hosted metrics/logs offering.

We are a family- & pet-friendly company (lots of us have kids, both of the human and fur-kind) and consider ourselves a remote/distributed company– something we have been doing for years, now. Even if you are located near our office in Stockholm (or Berlin), working from home is both common and encouraged.

About the Backend Platform Squad:

Grafana’s dashboards are backed by a Go application that proxies most requests to datasources. The backend platform takes care of the logic that goes into processing timeseries data efficiently– not just for pretty graphs, but also for continuously evaluating alert rules. The server application is also the place where search queries and user management happens.
Grafana’s backend runs on a high variety of hardware ranging from old Raspberry Pis to large enterprise clustered setups. Our backend plugins integrate with all kinds of databases. This requires thoughtful decisions regarding architecture, resilience and performance. We are also responsible for our hosted Grafana offering which operates thousands of Grafana instances on Kubernetes. As part of that project, we also have a follow-the-sun on call rotation.

What you’ll work on:

We’re currently looking for help in rewriting our alerting engine (Prometheus or other domain knowledge in monitoring can’t hurt). Another big project is a complete redesign of our backend plugin architecture, which handles much of the timeseries data. Our team is essential to Grafana as an Open Source project. We do a fair bit of issue triage for the community. And we’re responsible for shipping the build images for multiple platforms for which we continuously (pun!) change our CI/CD pipeline.

Who We Are Looking For:
You are comfortable working in a remote-first company; communication is key. For us, working together means being collaborative, friendly, kind, and respectful. We operate by consensus, you can contribute to a discussion but then commit to the team decision.
You are eager to learn and grow. Our team is currently looking to double in size over the next year. There is a lot of room for growth and development, and the team has quite a lot of knowledge to share for those who are willing to learn.
You enjoy working on complex solutions – Grafana is a highly technological solution and has avid followers who rely on it every day and care deeply about their workflows.
You enjoy being part of the community. Community is part of our core, and interacting with the community is a day-to-day thing for us. At the same time, you know how to recognize ideas and solutions that bring the biggest value to them and have the biggest impact on their experience.
You approach development holistically. The team owns the full life cycle of our code; from writing design docs, to looking at community feedback, and integration testing. We appreciate engineers who enjoy looking at the big picture, and also notice the details of the brush strokes.
You have some experience with operating your code, and the intricacies thereof. Since a lot of operators and developers use our software, having some grounding in both of these spaces really helps us with building better software for our users.
A selection of projects we’re currently working on:
Rewriting Alerting Engine for Grafana (Prometheus knowledge would be great)
Rearchitecting our backend plugins and the data model surrounding it https://github.com/grafana/grafana-plugin-sdk-go
Rearchitecting our CI/CD pipelines
Improve multi-tenancy & scalability
