Truss is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to help co-lead our Application Engineering practice. This is a full time, fully remote opportunity and reports to the Director of Application Engineering.

The salary range for this position is $192,500 – $220,000.

THE CHALLENGE

As a Senior Manager for the Application Engineering practice at Truss, you will think holistically about software delivery, development, and solve for organizational issues. You will lead the organization to embrace the constraints given by our clients and deliver on modern applications that improve the lives of their users. You will partner with a diverse team of engineers to create team and individual goals, establish effective modes of communication, feedback, collaboration, and accountability.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Manager will help grow the Application Engineering practice, including the management team and technical culture for our engineers. While not directly on a client project, you will lead with both process and influence to help our teams grow and deliver great products for our clients.

THE TEAM

Working in partnership with another Senior Manager this role will manage a group of individual contributors, team leads, and managers. This will entail creating a culture of direct, continuous feedback, weaving the needs of the organization and your team’s together, and promoting both culture and practices that support and sponsor Trussels from marginalized backgrounds. The Senior Application Engineer Manager will also support leadership initiatives, such as developing management training, collaborating on client team playbooks, and supporting sales and recruiting efforts.

THE SKILLSET

    • Solid background leading technical teams through all stages of the software development process, including running a production system
    • Success setting organization-wide technical strategy
    • Familiarity leading a team in a modern application tech stack, including but not limited to: Java, Javascript, Typescript, Go, Python, React, Angular, etc.
    • Proven track record incorporating a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion mindset into all areas of how you mentor, manage, and build your team and leading by example
    • Initiative with a bias for action and the ability to achieve buy-in from a diverse set of stakeholders across the organization
    • Effective delegation
    • Experience managing and coaching managers

Nice to haves:

    • Experience working in a client services, consulting, or contracting role as an individual contributor or in a leadership position building custom solutions
    • Leading fully distributed teams, and relying on tools such as Slack, Zoom, Gsuite and Jira for collaboration and communication
    • Familiarity with dynamic, fast-pace environments and a comfort with ambiguity
    • Comfort with cross-functional support of pre-sales project scoping and proposal development
    • Maintaining formal documentation of effective or failed processes and initiatives to help refine and iterate
    • Hands-on involvement with hiring a team, creating proper assessments and questions, conducting interviews, and ownership of team onboarding experiences

In 1 month this person will…

Complete Trussel onboarding and have an understanding of how the company, in general, and development practices, in particular, are structured

Establish a regular meeting cadence with direct reports, practice leadership and Senior Managers from other practices

Review goals and technical approach of all current projects in tandem with AppEng leads

In 3 months this person will…

Align with the other Sr Manager & Director of AppEng to set quarterly goals for the practice and identify which of these goals this person is directly accountable for

Continue to build  solid relationships with direct reports, and define  growth plans

Help schedule, plan and run recurring practice-wide meetings

In 6 months this person will…

Effectively deliver on practice wide company quarterly priorities

Lead direct reports through quarterly performance/alignment & and compensation reviews

Supporting company-wide quarterly priorities as established by Truss Leadership Team (TLT)
