Staff Engineer


As a Staff Software Engineer, you will help shape the vision and architecture of Weedmaps’ next generation backend infrastructure, making it easy for developers to build products and features. You will influence the technical direction as we build the world’s best cannabis enterprise marketplace and a robust portfolio of enterprise products to help enable our clients and the cannabis industry as a whole to flourish. The explosive growth of the cannabis industry as well as the almost completely differentiated legal requirements in each legal jurisdiction require that our software solve for increasingly complex problems.

Our products range from point-of-sale (POS) to wholesale marketplace to delivery fleet management and reporting.  Additionally, as we expand out platform to provide end-to-end SaaS solutions for the cannabis supply chain, it will be increasingly necessary to unify the framework and architecture on which the platform operates so that each product works seamlessly with one another.  You’ll be responsible for ensuring that we are building a scalable, reliable, secure and highly performant technology stack using best practices for delivering our products to market. You will ensure our architecture is flexible to allow for our growth into new and existing business lines.

This is a strategic technical role that requires strong partnership with other functions across the company. You’ll partner with other senior engineers and leaders across the company to translate technology capabilities into strategic business decisions. You’ll drive accountability and metrics ownership to translate strategy into results. And you’ll align and inspire your organization by effectively communicating the strategy and driving the team to build a world class marketplace in the cannabis space.


  • Collaborate with leadership and engineering teams to design and build technical solutions across the Weedmaps ecosystem
  • Work as a facilitator to help guide engineering teams make sound decisions by anticipating technical problems and providing solutions to overcome those problems
  • Given open-ended requirements, define the scope of work needed to meet the asks of the business
  • Work in a service oriented architecture spanning multiple domains and technology stacks
  • Facilitate cross-team work and bring groups with disparate interests to decisions while ensuring an inclusive platform
  • Drive critical path towards completing major company initiatives
  • Subject matter expert in specific vertical i.e. Payments, Logistics, E-Commerce
  • Mentor and train engineers across Weedmaps Engineering
  • Build long term technical strategies that align with Weedmaps’s business plan and influence the overall technical direction
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization at technology conferences and events
  • Develop architectures that are secure, scalable, robust, modular, API-centric and global
  • Support the application lifecycle (concept, design, test, release and support) following established development, documentation, testing and deployment processes
  • Proactive in identifying technology challenges at the organizational level
  • Write proposals with backing documentation including business case, architecture/solution diagrams, and development timeline
  • Provide technical direction for the overarching Weedmaps’s technology stack including Elixir, Ruby, JavaScript, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, AWS


  • 8+ years of software development experience with 3+ years of SaaS architectural experience in high-growth engineering organizations
  • Ability to demonstrate extremely high levels of technical knowledge, spanning System architecture, Frontend, Backend, Mobile, Devops
  • Give effective presentations to management, executives, and cross-functional teams
  • The ability to manage and simplify complexity when presented with a problem, process or system
  • Broad knowledge of system design
  • Experience in writing quality Frontend and Backend production­ code
  • Experience with scalable architecture and clean coding practices
  • Experience working in an e-commerce space building applications and technology to engage consumers and foster growth
  • Exposure to integrations and design, cloud based technologies, and latest mobile architectures
  • Effective and persuasive communication skills at all levels of management and engineers, both written and verbal
  • Experience working collaboratively at a high level with other teams within an organization
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree / work experience
