This is a mission critical role, building and improving upon the technology that makes the full breadth of the TechCrunch business possible, from the events we produce to the stories we publish.


  • Improve existing site functionality and build out new features in a WordPress environment
  • Take point on our front-end development
  • Build and maintain richly-interactive Gutenberg blocks and Customizer controls
  • Participate in design and code reviews
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, writers, editors, and other relevant teams
  • Perform assorted maintenance and iteration tasks as needed, including improving and updating legacy code and keeping third-party integrations up to date
  • Evangelize best practices around web development and advise key stakeholders on the best technical approaches to problems
  • Stay up to date on the latest web technologies and know when and when not to adopt and implement them

A Lot About You:

  • Expertise in WordPress development, including experience with ReactJS Gutenberg block creation using theme.json configuration
  • Expert in front-end development including the latest iterations of Vanilla JavaScript and CSS with BEM principles (experience with PostCSS is a strong plus)
  • Strong ability in PHP & MySQL, and back-end WordPress coding without having to rely on plugins
  • Good understanding of algorithms, data structures, performance optimization techniques, and developing with scalability in mind
  • Experience with git, docker, node, composer, and other relevant development tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Senior-level full-stack WordPress developer with front-end focus
  • Understands the underlying organization and structure of WordPress and can code without having to rely on third-party plugins
  • Proven track record of shipping products with well-structured, maintainable code
  • Can independently see a ticket through from conception to deployment without needing oversight
  • Have experience with projects that scale to large audiences
  • Are good at communicating and acting as a liaison between various teams
  • Enjoy problem solving and have strong debugging skills

The compensation for this position ranges from $128,250.00 – $266,875.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions, in addition to equity incentives.
