ABOUT FUNDERS FOR LGBTQ ISSUES

Funders for LGBTQ Issues is a network of funders committed to advancing equity and well-being for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, & queer (LGBTQ) communities. We provide three key services:

  1. Organize convenings and forums for LGBTQ funders to connect, coordinate their efforts, learn from each other, and maximize their impact.
  2. Provide trainings and support services for foundations to help them increase their LGBTQ inclusiveness in both grantmaking and internal practices.
  3. Provide up-to-the-minute information, research, and resources on LGBTQ grantmaking for the benefit of funders and the broader LGBTQ movement.

MISSION

Funders for LGBTQ Issues works to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at enhancing the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities, promoting equity, and advancing racial, economic and gender justice.

Overview of the Position

The Director of Programs serves a crucial leadership role by providing direction, oversight, and support to all of Funders for LGBTQ Issues’ programs and program staff. The Director of Programs also serves as a key thought-partner in helping to shape the organization’s programmatic goals in support of our mission, vision, and values, and in supporting our overall organizational development. The key areas of responsibility are:

  1. Lead all aspects of Funders for LGBTQ Issues convening and collective action programmatic work including overseeing and providing management and support to the directors of our major programs, such as Funding Forward, Grantmakers United for Trans Communities, Out in the South, and our philanthropic organizing work.
  2. Provide strategic direction and support for the organization’s philanthropic outreach and training efforts to engage new funders with LGBTQ communities.
  3. Support Funder’ organizational communications, both internally and externally.
  4. Provide internal and external organizational leadership and representation, including collaborating on strategic planning and organizational policy setting, representing Funders’ at speaking engagements, and supporting organizational budgeting.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with staff, board, members, and movement organizations to develop the strategic direction of Funders for LGBTQ Issues’ programming, centering racial, gender, and economic justice.
  • Provide oversight over all of Funders for LGBTQ Issues’ programmatic work: our Funding Forward conference, the Out in the South initiative, the Grantmakers United for Trans Communities initiative, and philanthropic organizing projects. Manage and supervise all initiative directors (3 people).
  • With the Deputy Director and other staff as needed, design and implement funder convenings, briefings, trainings, and webinars on LGBTQ funding on specific topics, communities, geographic regions, and other strategic opportunities that fall outside of our established program areas.
  • Support fundraising by ensuring our development department is kept apprised of key program developments for proposal drafts, and to facilitate relationship building with potential new funders.
  • Provide key program updates, highlights, and accomplishments to our communications team for publicity and promotion.
  • Represent Funders for LGBTQ Issues through public speaking engagements at philanthropic and movement conferences and convenings.
  • Partner with the Deputy Director and the finance department to develop the annual organizational budget via a collaborative process with staff across departments.
  • Act as liaison to ensure effective flows of information within the program department,  between senior management and the program department, and across the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Research to ensure that Funder’s programmatic and research work are mutually supportive.

Qualifications

  1. Broad understanding and commitment to LGBTQ issues, and in-depth knowledge of multiple areas that affect LGBTQ communities, such as racial and economic justice, education, health, immigration, criminalization, human rights, and reproductive justice and women’s rights.
  2. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and manage others, not only to execute work plans and meet goals, but also a strong interest in mentoring, supporting and cultivating others’ leadership skills and interests.
  3. Experience working with diverse stakeholders with varying levels of power and influence to build collaborations and partnerships.
  4. Experience managing complex, multi-year projects involving multiple stakeholders and partners, and resilience in the face of shifting landscapes and challenging environments.
  5. Effective verbal and written communicator, including experience constructing compelling learning environments both virtually and in-person.

REMOTE WORK AND MONTHLY STIPENDS

This role is remote to the continental United States. All staff are given the opportunity for an office rental $250 monthly stipend. All staff receive a monthly stipend of $100 for internet and cell phone.

TRAVEL

Periodically, employees engage in work travel. Such work travel is voluntary, with the full understanding of the health and safety risks involved, and FLGBTQI shall not be responsible for any and all potential exposure to COVID-19 as a result of employment with FLGBTQI. Normal travel for this position is 20%. This is expected to resume at this pre-pandemic level during 2023.

VACCINATION AND BOOSTER REQUIRED

FLGBTQI mandates full vaccinations for all employees, except for employees with valid medical waivers from a licensed physician. As such, verifying an employee’s vaccination status may be considered a condition precedent of employment. FLGBTQI shall make reasonable accommodations and document such reasonable accommodations, including a record of documentation relied upon, in the event that an exemption is granted with respect to FLGBTQI’s vaccination policy.

To be considered fully vaccinated, employees must have received the updated requisite rounds of the CDC-approved COVID-19 vaccinations as follows:

  • Two weeks after receiving their second dose in a two-dose series, the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines plus the accompanying booster shot.
  • OR two weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine, the Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine plus the accompanying booster shot.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary is $135,000. Excellent benefits, including full medical, health reimbursement and flexible spending accounts, retirement plan contributions, and a generous vacation schedule. Flexible work hours are friendly to balancing work and personal obligations. Funders for LGBTQ Issues values mentorship and leadership development and will work with the hired candidate to identify opportunities to support their professional growth in philanthropy and beyond.  The organization is currently reviewing and updating its total compensation policy to include a PayScale Equity Calculator Tool. This addresses any salary gaps in pay equity and designs a pay scale that embodies organizational principles and culture.
