The New York Times has been fulfilling its mission to “seek the truth and help people understand the world” for nearly 170 years by delivering world-class journalism.  More recently, this mission has been augmented by a deep investment in digital subscriptions and products.  All of this has culminated in nearly eight million subscribers using The New York Times to read news, enjoy games, try recipes, get help with shopping, and listen to podcasts.

As The New York Times seeks to become “a world class digital media business” we are expanding our investment in engineering. The Engineering Director, Content Delivery is a key role in helping us build an engineering organization primed to deliver world class platforms and services that elevate the work of our journalists and developers as well as the content and products that they produce.

About The Content Delivery Team

Content Delivery is a team that is central to the technical strategy and evolution at The New York Times, designed to propel the growth of the business by creating highly leverageable platforms and services in support of content distribution and supporting web and mobile teams in preparing content for presentation.  The following are the teams that build out such platforms and services:

  • Publishing Pipeline: provide capabilities that normalize content from a range of disparate sources

  • API Gateway: provide systems that prepare content for consumption by a range of different presentation layers

  • Mobile Platforms: provide shareable libraries, tools, and services that help other teams build mobile apps

  • Web Platforms: provide sharable platforms, libraries, tools, and services that help other teams build web-based applications

Content Delivery’s work lies at the heart of our strategy to elevate our engineering efforts. The team comprises about 40 engineers and leaders and is part of a broader mission that works closely with other functional partners such as product managers and program managers.  By providing shareable platforms and services, Content Delivery also works very closely with a wide array of internal teams, including: our infrastructure team; front-end teams; content management teams; data teams; teams building games, cooking, interactive, and audio content; advertising teams; and more.

As Engineering Director, Content Delivery, you will play a key role in ensuring incredible audience experiences for readers of The New York Times journalism and other content. You will also be instrumental in building and growing a high performing, talented team to achieve these goals.

About You

The Engineering Director, Content Delivery will report to the Head of Core Platforms Engineering. This is a complex engineering leadership role, which means we are seeking candidates who are strong technologists, exceptional leaders of engineers and engineering leaders, and highly collaborative cross-functional partners. We expect our candidates to demonstrate competence in at least some of the following criteria:

  • You have led large, complex, and high-performing engineering teams

  • You have extensive experience balancing and navigating the trade-offs between maintaining existing systems while moving organizations onto new and evolving technology stacks

  • You know what it takes to build large scale distributed systems, designed to be highly reliable, scalable, secure, and observable

  • You have an understanding of the business and a passion for the mission of the company

This role is open to full-time remote and NYC Based in-office employees
