Job Description

This is an important and exciting moment to work at The New York Times’s Wirecutter business. To help manage our growth we’re looking for a financial professional to help support the FP&A function. This is a unique, exciting opportunity to join an entrepreneurial environment backed by the resources of a larger company.

You will have a firm understanding of corporate FP&A principles and the ability to consistently provide accurate numbers. You will be highly cross-functional, working closely with corporate finance, editorial, operations, data insights, marketing, product and technology. Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will be responsible for reporting revenue and expenses, analyzing project profitability, completing the month-end close and financial modeling.

Financial Close

  • Ensure the accuracy of month-end accounting and reporting

  • Explain variances to finance and business leadership

  • Manage and reporting of Wirecutter’s P&L

Financial Operations

  • Transform existing financial reports to align with the growing business needs (ie. set up codes, reclass historical, update reports)

  • Support the migration of manual reporting to automated reporting wherever possible, including managing the implementation of a new workforce planning tool

Financial Planning

  • Help create Wirecutter’s quarterly and annual strategic planning and budgeting process

  • Maintain Wirecutter’s 10-year financial model

  • Assess return on investment impact of certain capital investments

  • Support the wider Wirecutter team on general business partnering and coming up with solutions for daily ad-hoc requests

  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and financial modeling aiding decision support for senior management

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Educational concentration or training certification in economics, finance, or accounting

  • 3+ years of experience in relevant financial roles with a sound understanding of financial and accounting concepts

  • Excellent MS excel (can build and maintain complex spreadsheets) and PowerPoint skills

  • Experience with Hyperion Essbase or related financial systems preferred

  • Experience explaining finance issues in a clear manner to finance and non-finance professionals

  • Agile with the ability to handle simultaneous requests effectively and efficiently

  • Technical expertise required with the ability to work with large amounts of data and build financial models

  • Passion for Wirecutter and/or The New York Times and a commitment to be a part of our innovation and growth
