Job Description

The New York Times’ Data Engineering group is looking for inventive and motivated back-end or full-stack software engineers to join the Data Collections team. You will build full-stack data applications and infrastructure. You will work with the Data Collections product owner and project manager to implement projects and will report to the team’s engineering manager. Our platform captures analytics data across The Times’ user-facing properties. We process tens-of-thousands of events per second, distill terabytes of data each day, and support reporting and decision-making at all levels of the company.

About Us

The Data Collections team owns our internal analytics tracking platform, Event Tracker. We’re a remote-friendly, back-end-leaning full-stack team and use Google Cloud services. Our core applications rely on Google App Engine (Go), Google Cloud Dataflow (Java), BigQuery (SQL), and Airflow (Python). We maintain frontend tracking libraries (JavaScript) for the web and assist with third-party tracking implementations using Google Tag Manager. We also work with native app developers to support Android and iOS shared libraries for Event Tracker.


  • Support the full Event Tracker application stack

  • Consult with analysts and product owners designing tracking solutions

  • Advise other engineering teams implementing analytics events

  • Review third-party marketing tracking with an eye to data governance

  • Learn new tools and languages when needed


  • 2+ years production-level software engineering experience working with:

    • Data intensive applications in Java (eg. Google Cloud Dataflow / Apache Beam)

    • Relational databases and standard SQL (eg. BigQuery / columnar DB)

    • Data schema design

  • Knowledge of front-end analytics implementation and tag management systems

  • Experience with Agile project management

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.  On-call hours are unpaid, unless informed otherwise by your manager.
